สำหรับแฟนนักอ่านนิยายวิทยาศาสตร์แล้วคงไม่มีใครไม่รู้จักอาเธอร์ ซี. คล้าก หนึ่งในสามนักเขียนนิยายวิทยาศาสตร์ที่ทรงอิทธิพลที่สุดของโลก กระทั่งในประเทศไทยเองผลงานของอาเธอร์ ซี. คล้ากก็ได้รับการตีพิมพ์และมีแฟนๆ ติดตามอย่างเหนียวแน่นเรื่อยมา ดังนั้นข่าวการเสียชีวิตของนักประพันธ์ผู้นี้จึงนำมาซึ่งความเศร้าโศกและเสียดายอย่างยิ่งแก่วงการนิยายวิทยาศาสตร์ นับเป็นความสูญเสียครั้งยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดนับตั้งแต่การจากไปของโรเบิร์ต เอ. ไฮไลน์ และ ไอแซค อาสิมอฟ

ประวัติชีวิตของ อาเธอร์ ซี. คล้าก ทั้งน่าสนใจและแสดงให้เห็นถึงแววของอัจฉริยภาพตั้งแต่ต้น ทว่าหากเราจะลงลึกไปถึงรายละเอียดชีวิตของเขาแล้วล่ะก็ คงจะยาวเป็นสิบหน้าเป็นแน่ดังนั้นในบทความสั้นๆ นี้จะเป็นเพียงประวัติโดยย่อเท่านั้น

อาเธอร์ ซี. คล้าก เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 16 ธันวาคม 1917 ที่เมือง Minehead จังหวัด Somerset ประเทศอังกฤษ ตั้งแต่ยังเล็กคล้ากชอบการดูดาวจากกล้องดูดาวทำเองและอ่านนิตยสารนิยายวิทยาศาสตร์เก่าๆ อย่าง pulp magazine อย่างลุ่มหลง และยังเริ่มงานเขียนของตัวเองเมื่อเข้าโรงเรียน หลังจากเรียนจบคล้ากได้เข้ารับใช้ชาติในสงครามโลกครั้งที่สองโดยเป็นส่วนหนึ่งใน Royal Air force ในตำแหน่ง ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านเรดาร์ ในตอนนี้เองที่หนังสือของเขาได้ถูกตีพิมพ์เป็นครั้งแรก งานเขียนและบทความของคล้ากหลายชิ้นได้กลายเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้คนนับล้าน อาทิ การสื่อสารผ่านดาวเทียม กระสวยอวกาศ ซูปเปอร์คอมพิวเตอร์ รวมไปถึงระบบการสื่อสารอย่างฉับไว นับแต่ปี 1952 เป็นต้นมาอาเธอร์ก็ได้ผันตัวมาเป็นนักเขียนเต็มตัว และย้ายไปอยู่ประเทศศรีลังกาตั้งแต่ปี 1956 และจากได้ไปอย่างสงบเมื่อวันที่ 19 มีนาคม 2008

ดาวเทียมค้างฟ้า (Geostationary Satellite) *

ผลงานของ อาร์เธอร์ ซี คล้าร์ก นอกเหนือจากนวนิยายวิทยาศาสตร์คือ แนวคิดในการสื่อสารข้ามประเทศด้วยดาวเทียม ซึ่งเป็นมรดกตกทอดมาทำให้เราได้ดูทีวีโทรทัศน์กันในแบบทุกวันนี้
ดาวเทียมค้างฟ้า (Geostationary Satellite) เป็นดาวเทียมที่อยู่กับที่เมื่อเทียบกับโลก มีวงโคจรอยู่ในระนาบเดียวกับเส้นศูนย์สูตร อยู่สูงจากผิวโลกประมาณ 35,786 ก.ม.

วงโคจรพิเศษนี้อาจเรียกว่า “วงโคจรค้างฟ้า” หรือ “วงโคจรคลาร์ก” เพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่นาย Arthur C. Clarke ผู้ค้นพบวงโคจรนี้

วงโคจรคลาร์ก เป็นวงโคจรในระนาบเส้นศูนย์สูตร (Equator) ที่มีความสูงเป็นระยะที่ทำให้ดาวเทียมเคลื่อนที่ด้วยความเร็วเชิงมุมเท่ากับการหมุนของโลก
แล้วทำให้เกิดแรงเหวี่ยงหนีศูนย์กลางมีค่าเท่ากับแรงดึงดูดของโลกพอดี เป็นผลให้ดาวเทียมดูเหมือนอยู่คงที่
ณ ระดับความสูงนี้ ดาวเทียมค้างฟ้าส่วนใหญ่ใช้ในการสื่อสารระหว่างประเทศ และภายในประเทศ เช่น ดาวเทียม Intelsat, Palapa, Asiasat, Thaicom เป็นต้น

วงโคจรคลาร์ (Clarke Belt) ถูกนำเสนอครั้งแรกในบทความ
“Extra-Terrestrial Relays – Can Rocket Stations Give Worldwide Radio Coverage?,” ตีพิมพ์ในหนังสือ Wireless World เมื่อ เดือนตุลาคม ปี 1945

โดยเสนอแนวคิดในการสื่อสารด้วยคลื่นวิทยุเพื่อให้ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ทั่วโลก ด้วยการใช้ดาวเทียมอย่างน้อย 3 ดวง โคจรเหนือเส้นศูนย์สูตร ในตำแหน่งที่ทำมุมซึ่งกันและกัน 120 องศา
โดยโคจรไปพร้อมกับโลกด้วยความเร็วเท่ากับเวลาที่โลกหมุนรอบตัวเอง (Synchronous orbit) ดังนั้น ตำแหน่งของดาวเทียมจะคงที่ตลอดเวลา เมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับโลก
